MVC with Entrapment in Highland

At 1038 hours, the Cochranville Fire Company, Ambulance 28 (Parkesburg) and Medic 94
(SCCEMS) was alert for a Motor Vehicle Crash with entrapment at Route 10 and Gum Tree
Road in Highland Township. Chief 27 responded at 1041, Chester County Fire Board
advised that the incident was a vehicle vs. utility pole with one male patient reported
trapped and unconscious. Sky Flight Care 1 was placed on standby and Engine 27-1 made
the response requesting the utility company priority 1.
Ambulance 28-2 arrived on scene at 1045 confirming the report of heavy entrapment and
made access to the two patients trapped in the front of an SUV. Engine 27-1 arrived and
preceded with rescue operation. Engine 27-1 established Gum Tree Road CP. Medic 94-1
on scene started treatment on the most serious patient. Rescue 27 arrived on scene with
crews aiding the Engine crew with rescue.
Medic 94-1 confirmed the flight of one patient; Chief 27 took LZO and advised Sky Flight
Care 1 of the LZ on the east side of the scene. From confirmed flight to on scene for the
helicopter was 2 minutes.
Fire Police were requested from Station 26 (Atglen), Station 44 (Westwood), and
Lancaster County Station 5-2 (Christiana).
CFC crew popped the driver’s door, driver then step out of the vehicle on his own. Patient
was boarded in place and turned over to Ambulance 28-1 and Medic 94-2 for transport to
Christiana in Delaware.
With the driver out of the vehicle the crew was able to remove the driver’s seat and access
the trapped patient. Patient was extracted at 1109 hours. Patient was turned over to Sky
Flight Care 1 for the flight to Christiana in Delaware. Once the patients were removed
from the car all responders were cleared from the immediate area of the scene to allow
utility company into the area.
Fire Police remained in place, all apparatus cleared the scene at 1212 hours.
PSP requested the road to remain closed for several hours, road blocks were placed at
Route 10 and Friends Meeting House Rd. All Fire Police cleared the scene turning it over
to PSP and the utility company at 1326 hours.
